CAP Supports Balloon Festival

Twenty Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members attended an Aerospace Education Day at the Philip, SD, Airport Saturday, August 21. Attendees came from Rapid City, Spearfish, Custer, Philip, Pierre and Sioux Falls.
Two South Dakota Wing teams competed August 21 and 22 in CAP's North Central Region Cadet Competition. Seven teams from four states competed, including two from South Dakota's Sioux Falls Composite Squadron and Big Sioux Composite Squadron.
Civil Air Patrol has amended its uniform rules to allow more flexibility in women’s hairstyles while in uniform. The changes match the United States Air Force changes that became effective in June.
One of the services South Dakota Wing, CAP, provides to the South Dakota Air National Guard is low-level route surveys. The surveys check the training routes the guard uses, as a safety precaution, to check for new towers or other obstructions the guard aircraft might encounter.
South Dakota Wing of Civil Air Patrol will conduct dual East and West River training exercises Saturday (August 14) to practice skills used in search and rescue and disaster relief missions. The exercise mission bases will be in Sioux Falls and Piedmont.

Maj. Sarah Smith, USAF, was a special guest of Pierre Composite Squadron on Tuesday, August 3. Smith, originally from Fort Pierre, joined the meeting via Teams to share experiences of her ten years in the military and discuss why she joined, talk about ROTC, and share about her job.
Young people attending the Sioux Falls Airshow learned about aerospace education and about CAP on Aug. 5. Sioux Falls and Lincoln County Composite Squadrons teamed up to create an informative booth at the Aviation Day festivities held at Maverick Aviation on Joe Foss Field, Sioux Falls.
