Young people attending the Sioux Falls Airshow learned about aerospace education and about CAP on Aug. 5.  Sioux Falls and Lincoln County Composite Squadrons teamed up to create an informative booth at the Aviation Day festivities held at Maverick Aviation on Joe Foss Field, Sioux Falls.

The booth presented the youth with educational information on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) options in Aerospace, including cyberspace security, rocketry, airplane flight basics, and drone technologies/applications. The CAP members also had about 100 small Styrofoam airplanes as give-aways. The booth also featured a CAP recruiting display.

“This community event was a great opportunity to help today’s youth learn about the exciting STEM field of Aerospace Education,” said Lt. Col. Bill Strandell, SD Wing director of development.

CAP was also responsible for airshow ramp security, including the static displays of vintage aircraft. Fifteen cadet members provided information at the booth and took turns doing perimeter security on the tarmac around the many airplanes on display at this huge event. Ten Senior members were also there to assist.

Thrivent Financial provided CAP with seed funding to help cover administrative and support costs. Hundreds of young people and their families stopped at the CAP booth in a steady stream. Almost every child stood in line to try the South Dakota Wing flight simulator.
