Sioux Falls Composite Squadron Wins SDWG Cadet Competition
(Pierre) - Sioux Falls Composite Squadron was the overall winner of the Civil Air Patrol’s South Dakota Wing Cadet Competition. The event pitted youth CAP members, known as cadets, from three South Dakota units in friendly competition. Big Sioux Composite Squadron placed second and Rushmore Composite Squadron was third.
“I think my favorite part of this whole experience is simply seeing all of the cadets together again,” said Capt. Richard Rezac, one of the coordinators of the event. “After 2020 and everything we've gone through, for them to have the opportunity to come together again, participate in things that they enjoy, and have good-spirited friendly competition and still support each other even in a competitive environment, that's what this entire program is about."
Competition awards were presented by Lt. Col Linda Buechler and Capt. Richard Rezac. The cadet teams from Sioux Falls Composite Squadron and Big Sioux Composite Squadron will compete with teams from six other states in August at CAP’s North Central Region Cadet Competition at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Due to COVID-19, there will not be a national competition this year
Judges for the event commended the three teams of competitors for supporting each other. For example, after the leading cadets finished their mile run, they ran back to those from all three units who were still on the course and cheered them on, providing encouragement as each cadet finished the run.
