Pierre, SD - South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will conduct a state-level training school from July 22 through July 24 at Farm Island State Recreation Area in Pierre, SD. It will focus on training CAP ground team members, including both youth and adult members of CAP.

“I am very excited for this great opportunity to train our members to be Ground Team Members,” said 2nd. Lt. Jacob Roth, CAP activity director for the school. “Ground Team Members are vital to our search and rescue operations, so providing this training will be very beneficial.”

Civil Air Patrol performs search, disaster relief and other missions in its role as the U.S. Air Force auxiliary, part of the Air Force Total Force. CAP is aligned with First Air Force to rapidly respond to nonmilitary threats domestically when tasked in a Defense Support of Civil Authorities capacity to save lives, relieve suffering, prevent property damage and provide humanitarian assistance.

“The focus of this activity is to take a new member that needs to become ground team qualified from having little to no experience all the way to a fully qualified ground team member over this weekend,” said Roth.

CAP has close to 400 members in South Dakota with units in Brookings, Custer, Miller, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish and Tea. The wing can deploy its six aircraft, ground teams and small search drones to assist in emergency response and other support to local, state, tribal and federal agencies.
