SD Wing Members Gather for Intensive ES Training

March 10, 2024

Nearly three dozen dedicated members of South Dakota Wing, representing all squadrons plus wing staff, participated in an intensive Emergency Services Academy aimed at enhancing their emergency response skills.

Based at Johnson Siding in the Black Hills, west of Rapid City, the academy provided specialized training tailored to both ground teams and aircrews. Ground units honed their expertise in the Black Hills terrain, while aircrews worked at Rapid City Regional Airport.

Demonstrating their proficiency, aircrews achieved an admirable 100% success rate in locating emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) operating in the VHF and UHF bands. This outstanding performance underscores the effectiveness of the training and the dedication of the participants.

Furthermore, both air and ground units effectively utilized a portable CAP repeater strategically positioned atop a nearby ridgeline, facilitating seamless communication and coordination during operations.

The Emergency Services Academy forms an integral part of South Dakota Wing's “Year of ES” initiative—a concerted effort by wing members to elevate all facets of the wing's emergency services capabilities. Through rigorous training and continuous improvement, South Dakota Wing members remain committed to ensuring the readiness and effectiveness of their emergency response teams, thereby enhancing the wing's overall operational readiness and ability to serve the community in times of need.
