SD Wing Evaluated as “Effective”

South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol, is “effective” in its ability to accomplish its missions safely, efficiently, and effectively. The rating followed a staff assistance visit (SAV) by the Air Force North Central Liaison Region.
“Because CAP is the civilian auxiliary of the Air Force and receives federal funds, the Air Force regularly reviews the effectiveness with which each state CAP organization performs its missions,” said Col. Michael Marek, CAP’s state commander in South Dakota. “This staff assistance visit is preliminary to a comprehensive compliance inspection in the spring of 2025, and it gave us a small number of points on which we can fine-tune.”
The current “effective” evaluation says that CAP’s performance and operation in South Dakota meets mission requirements, that South Dakota Wing carries out procedures and activities in an effective and competent manner, and that it manages resources and programs efficiently. Marek said.
With over 460 members in South Dakota and units in Brookings, Custer, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish and Tea, CAP performs operational missions that are part of the USAF’s support to civil authorities to save lives, relieve suffering, prevent property damage, and provide humanitarian assistance. In addition, CAP operates a world-class youth program and fosters aerospace education for members and the general public.
