Pierre CAP Cadet Receives NCO Award from VFW
Pierre Civil Air Patrol Cadet C/TSgt Darion D. Osterkamp has received the NCO Citation and Medal Award from the Pierre Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8, in recognition of outstanding achievement and exceptional leadership ability.
Osterkamp was also promoted recently to C/TSgt after completing all of the requirements of the Captain Eddie Rickenbacker achievement. The Cadet’s parents performed the rank pinning ceremony. Squadron Commander Capt Ruth Carley supervised the ceremony.
The CAP youth program, known as the cadet program, is geared towards developing and training young adults to become leaders in their community, state and nation while instilling knowledge of aerospace education. Cadets, who can join the program once they turn 12, can receive five orientation flights in a powered CAP aircraft along with developing leadership skills and education.
Cadet Osterkamp has been a member of the Pierre Squadron since December 2018. He and his family live in Onida, SD and he commutes to Pierre each week for squadron meetings and other CAP activities. He attended a CAP encampment at Camp Rapid in Rapid City in 2019. He is Cadet Commander in CAP’s Pierre Composite Squadron.
He joined CAP because of the benefits and training he could get through CAP and because of the military training he gets to prepare himself for basic training he will begin this summer. He found it very interesting and helpful how the Civil Air Patrol program turns average kids into leaders and also liked how kids who are in CAP volunteer their time for something that matters.
After completion of his senior year in high school this year, he plans to enlist with the U. S. Army.
“CAP helped me put my foot in the door on what military training and responsibilities are all about to give me a better understanding when I leave this summer for basic training,” he said.
In interests beyond CAP he said, “I like to hunt and fish, I like to be in other activities like FFA, FCCLA, Cross Country, Band, Chorus, 4-H Archery, and Air Rifle.”
