Pierre Composite Squadron cadets and senior members accomplished an activity October 15-16 that had been planned for some time, but had to be adjusted to fit CAP's COVID restrictions. An overnight camping trip was originally planned for the weekend but the overnight portion was removed to follow current guidelines.

On Friday evening, the Pierre Squadron cadets C/TSgt. Joshua Vermundson, C/SSgt. Darion Osterkamp, C/Amn. Aimee Schmitt and Cadet Evin Kalmback, got together at the Isaac Walton youth building with MSgt. Jonathan Hays, an instructor with the Pierre Jr Shooting Club. They learned gun safety and proper handling, operation of an air pistol, practiced and ultimately shot for score to qualify for their NRA Pro-Marksman award. The instructors noted that the cadets all did well shooting and had fun doing it. Through the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program they were able to earn their first qualification award for air pistol, the Pro-Marksman award. This award is earned by shooting at 4 targets and earning a score of 40 out of 100 on each target.

On Saturday morning at 9:00, three cadets from Pierre squadron met at LaFramboise Island to do some hiking and gain training along the way. Once they hiked to the interior of the island, the cadets each got a chance to fly the squadron’s Skydio UAV. The cadets trained on checking weather, airspace identification and preflighting the UAV. When operating the UAV, cadets became familiar with the features and controls of the UAV.

After flying, the cadets used handheld Garmin GPS64 units to mark and edit waypoints and navigate to and from waypoints. The morning activities concluded at noon.

Attending were Capt. Jon Becker, C/TSgt. Joshua Vermundson, C/SSgt. Darion Osterkamp, and Cadet Evin Kalmback.
