The South Dakota and North Dakota Wings of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) are set to host the 2025 Joint Dakota Encampment (JDE) from June 21 to June 29 at Camp Rapid.
This premier training event will unite over 150 cadets and senior members from 10 states, marking it as one of the largest encampments in the region. The encampment offers cadets an immersive experience in military-style discipline, leadership, and aerospace education.
Cadet leadership roles are pivotal to the encampment's success. Cadet Major Clover Naughton from the Sioux Falls Composite squadron, is the Cadet Commander. While cadets largely run the encampment, a large adult support staff guides them. Lt. Col. Tom Anez with the South Dakota Wing is this year’s Encampment Commander.
“I look forward to leading my fellow cadets in this challenging activity,” Naughton said. “It is a tough eight days, but the things we learn and the friendships we make are invaluable.”
Participants will engage in daily physical training, and drill and ceremonies. They will also participate in classroom sessions covering CAP history, Air Force customs, and emergency services. A highlight of the week includes orientation flights over the Black Hills, providing cadets with firsthand exposure to aviation.
Anez, an Army combat veteran, has volunteered at and led a number of CAP encampments around the country.
“The planning for this encampment began after the completion of last year’s encampment at Camp Grafton, N.D.,” Anez said. “This is a complicated, high-level event that is largely planned and managed by the cadets. It is wonderful to see young people take on such a challenge and succeed.”
Additionally, cadets will tour Ellsworth Air Force Base and the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, where they will interact with active-duty Air Force personnel and learn about various aerospace careers. The encampment also features the Leadership Reaction Course at Camp Rapid West, designed to enhance teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The Joint Dakota Encampment is a cornerstone of cadet development, offering a structured and challenging environment that emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.
The encampment public affairs staff will provide updates on the encampment on the South Dakota Wing website, as well as on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
