CAP’s Crazy Horse Composite Squadron, has been named by the national Wreaths Across America (WAA) organization as the top group sponsor in South Dakota.

CAP squadrons and other organizations raise money to place wreaths on the graves of veterans during the December holiday season.  The Custer-based squadron raised funds for at least 324 wreaths for graves at Custer Community Cemetery.

During July, the national WAA organization is recognizing the volunteer Sponsorship Groups and individuals who “give back” to their communities while helping to share the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, all year long. Through this national program, WAA has given more than $17 million in local contributions over the last 14 years and has helped support local charitable efforts that include helping living veterans, combating homelessness, and feeding those in need.

Capt. Donald Weiand, Crazy Horse Composite Squadron, noted in December that there are 384 veteran graves in the Custer Cemetery, and wreaths for all of them are the squadron’s goal for 2022.

In addition to the efforts of Crazy Horse Composite Squadron, Lincoln County Composite Squadron, which meets at Tea, raised money for 130 wreaths at the South Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery near Sioux Falls.
