CAP Volunteers Support Pierre Airshow

June 6, 2024

Close to 30 Civil Air Patrol members from across South Dakota assisted the organizers of the Let Freedom Fly International airshow in Pierre May 25-26.

CAP’s Pierre Composite Squadron and SD Wing staff assisted the air show organizers by helping with parking, traffic, and food and beverage sales. CAP also had a static display of a Pierre-based CAP Cessna 182 as well as a recruiting booth.

“An enormous, heartfelt thank you goes out to each one of you volunteers who took time away from your family and other Memorial Day traditions, to help make the Let Freedom Fly Airshow an incredible success,” said Connie Tveidt, airshow volunteer coordinator.

Around 10,000 people attended the airshow, based on ticket sales. Unlike other recent airshows in the region, the Pierre air show charged for admission. Proceeds go to the Capitol Area United Way.

“Whether you helped set up or take down; directed traffic or parking; worked your tail off in some of the 14 food booths and cashier stands; checked in spectators or volunteers at the gate; made fresh lemonade; manned a soda tent; sold airshow gear; decorated for the celebration; shuttled people from parking lots; delivered meals; or picked up trash; we want you to know, it couldn’t have happened without you!” Tveidt said.

Col. Michael Marek, CAP’s state commander in South Dakota, reflected on CAP’s support of the airshow.

“Volunteer service is one of CAP’s core values,” he said. “Promoting and supporting aviation is one of the original reasons Congress chartered CAP as the civilian volunteer auxiliary of the Air Force. Our participation in the Let Freedom Fly International Airshow fulfilled those purposes, was a great Aerospace Education and STEM learning opportunity for cadets in our youth program, and strengthened our community partnerships in the state capitol community.”
