CAP Joins Lawrence County Search
South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol, responded to a request from Lawrence County to assist in a missing person search in the remote Iron Lake area of the Northern Black Hills on Monday, June 5. The lake is at the end of 12 miles of gravel road in an area with little cellular service.
CAP launched an aircraft for visual airborne searching in the rugged forest surrounding the lake, cross-crossing the area multiple times. CAP ground and drone teams were also dispatched.
The missing teenager was eventually found safe in Sturgis, well outside the area of the last known position, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.
Local emergency managers may request CAP's participation in search and disaster relief photography by contacting the state Emergency Operations Center, which in turn requests approval for CAP's involvement from tCAP National Headquarters and the Air Force.
