Eclipse data submitted from South Dakota Wing “made an important contribution” to Civil Air Patrol’s report to NASA on data collected during the recent solar eclipse. South Dakota Wing had seven teams ready to collect "citizen science" data in partnership with NASA's GLOBE Observer program. Most faced cloudy skies, but teams were still able to collect data.
Five South Dakota Wing squadrons have earned the prestigious Squadron Aerospace Education Award from CAP’s National Headquarters.
South Dakota Wing provided a series of orientation flights to Air Force ROTC cadets from South Dakota State University, Air Force Junior ROTC cadets from Roosevelt High School, and CAP's own cadets on September 15-16. The flights for the 51 cadets were funded by the US Air Force.

South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will hold an Aerospace Education Day for its youth members, known as cadets, August 19-21 at the Onida, SD fairgrounds. The event will include orientation flights in CAP aircraft, multi-engine model rocketry, small search drones, and a range of other aerospace and STEM activities.
South Dakota Wing will soon receive a G1000 glass cockpit simulator, funded by North Central Region. The simulator, which works with standard flight simulator software, is intended for pilot training, but may also be used for Aerospace Education.
CAP has 2,500 aUAS drones nationally. South Dakota Wing did the first-ever actual CAP SAR mission using a drone. The small drones also great for STEM and Aerospace Education.
