Staff Sergeant Shawn Bawden is the Command Non-Commissioned Officer for the South Dakota Wing. He is the leader of the Wing’s NCO Corps and the primary advisor to the Wing Commander on matters concerning mission effectiveness as well as the professional development, training, and utilization of the Wing’s NCOs.
SSgt Bawden served in the US Army from 1996 to 2004 with overseas deployments to Haiti, Kosovo, and Iraq. During that time he completed assignments with the 10th Mountain Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. He was attached to the 10th Special Forces Group (Task Force Viking) during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Before moving to South Dakota in 2018, SSgt Bawden worked for the National Park Service for nine years including positions at Redwood National Park (Archives Technician), Yellowstone National Park (Archivist), Everglades National Park and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (Park Ranger). He is also a fully-qualified Public Information Officer Type 2 and has been on numerous national and regional incidents. He was assigned to the Gila Las Cruces Incident Management Team during the 2018 and 2019 wildland fire seasons.
SSgt Bawden also has a long interest in aviation. He started flying when he was 14 years old and took his first solo flight on his 16th birthday!
